Course Description

This course delves into the critical mental health challenges faced by children in the foster care system, with a focus on understanding and addressing the factors that contribute to suicide risk. Participants will explore the unique vulnerabilities of foster children, including the emotional and psychological impacts of trauma, neglect, and instability, as well as the systemic barriers to accessing effective mental health care.

Through an in-depth examination of current support services, the course highlights strategies for identifying and addressing the mental health needs of foster youth. Emphasis is placed on the pivotal role of foster parents and caregivers in creating a supportive environment, as well as the need for targeted interventions and programs proven to reduce suicide risks.

Additionally, the course addresses the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide within the foster care system and discusses policy reforms to enhance resources and support for at-risk youth. By engaging with research, case studies, and collaborative discussions, participants will gain practical tools and insights to foster resilience, improve mental health outcomes, and contribute to systemic change.

This course is ideal for foster care professionals, social workers, mental health practitioners, policymakers, and caregivers seeking to make a meaningful impact on the well-being of foster children.
