Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of psychotropic medications in the context of foster care, equipping foster parents with essential knowledge to navigate this critical aspect of child welfare. Participants will begin by understanding the basics of psychotropic medications, including how they address mental health issues in children. The course will examine common mental health diagnoses in foster children, highlighting why these children are at higher risk and what conditions often necessitate such medications. It will guide participants through the evaluation process before prescribing, emphasizing the importance of informed decisions and considering non-medication alternatives. Foster parents will learn to advocate effectively for their children, monitor and manage potential side effects, and understand how age and trauma impact treatment choices. The course also emphasizes the collaborative efforts needed among foster parents, caseworkers, therapists, and pediatricians to ensure holistic care while keeping pace with recent advancements and trends in pediatric psychotropic medication.
