I first met Demetri Semper at a foster care recruitment event earlier this year, and our paths crossed again just this month—this time at my own home. Demetri’s story is one of resilience, faith, and a deep-rooted commitment to making a difference for children in foster care.
Demetri’s journey began in Miami, where he was one of five siblings. Born premature with cocaine in his system, he spent his first 14 months in the hospital, fighting to survive. After a brief time in foster care with a Jehovah’s Witness foster mother and two foster sisters in Miami Lakes, Demetri and his biological brother were adopted by a Christian family in Hollywood, Florida. His adoptive family provided stability, faith, and the support he needed to overcome early obstacles. Now, over 23 years later, that family remains a central part of his life.
Today, Demetri channels his personal experiences into his work as a licensed specialist with One More Child in Alachua County, Florida. Just recently, he took a short trip to Putnam County to pick up a new car seat for a newly licensed single foster mom in need of an updated, safe seat for her four-year-old foster son. It was a simple yet powerful act—one that captures Demetri’s heart and commitment to helping others along a path he knows well.
Demetri’s journey from a vulnerable child in foster care to a compassionate advocate is a beautiful testament to his faith and calling. His story reminds us of the profound impact that lived experience and unwavering dedication can have in the lives of those facing similar challenges. As he continues to serve, his work reaches beyond his own story, touching the lives of children and youth across Florida and proving that the past can indeed fuel a powerful purpose for the future.
