Course Description

Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing forms of child exploitation, and youth in foster care and adoptive families are among those at the greatest risk. This course equips caregivers to recognize the warning signs of grooming and trafficking, understand why children with trauma histories may be especially vulnerable, and build protective relationships that reduce risk. Participants will learn practical strategies for creating a safe home environment, monitoring online activity, responding wisely to concerning behaviors, and partnering with professionals when trafficking is suspected. Through an expert interview and real-world discussion, foster and adoptive parents will leave with greater confidence to protect the children in their care while strengthening trust, connection, and resilience.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define human trafficking and recognize common myths.
  • Identify early warning signs of grooming and exploitation.
  • Understand why foster and adopted youth are at increased risk.
  • Recognize how traffickers use relationships and technology to recruit youth.
  • Respond appropriately when concerns arise.
  • Build protective relationships that reduce vulnerability.
  • Create a family safety plan that promotes resilience and healthy communication.
