Serving Children & Families    Across the United States

Investing in Better Outcomes for Florida’s Foster Children

This past weekend, I traveled to Orlando to support the annual conference of the Florida Foster and Adoptive Parent Association (Florida FAPA). The conference brings together foster, adoptive, and kinship caregivers from across the state for education, encouragement, and connection. Florida FAPA exists to support and train caregivers while advocating for the children and families they serve.

I had the privilege of leading a workshop on Trauma-Sensitive Parenting. The room was full, with approximately 35 foster parents in attendance. About half of those present had been fostering for less than a year. The group reflected the diversity of Florida’s foster care community—single parents, married couples, and caregivers from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

Despite their differences, everyone in the room shared one common purpose: serving vulnerable children.

The 75-minute training was energetic, interactive, and fast-paced. Participants actively engaged in discussions, shared experiences, and encouraged one another. It was inspiring to see both new and experienced caregivers learning together and building relationships that will continue long after the conference ends.

The impact of training extends far beyond the classroom. As a result of this workshop, approximately 40 children now have caregivers who are better equipped to understand trauma, respond effectively to challenging behaviors, and create greater stability in the home.

What does that mean for the children?

It means better outcomes.

It means caregivers who are more confident, more prepared, and more committed to meeting the unique needs of children who have experienced hardship. It means homes where healing can happen and where children can thrive.

Every hour invested in training foster parents is an investment in the future of the children they serve.

Thank you to Florida FAPA for hosting another outstanding conference and for their ongoing commitment to supporting foster and adoptive families throughout our state.
